In 1961 Citroën decided that it wanted to make a run at the crown with a revolutionary new top model, launching ‘Project-S’, a project with a Sci-Fi sounding name that did however ultimately produce a car that looked like it was from outer space. The design came from the hand of Citroën designer, Robert Opron, and if this car were launched today it would still be a sensation. The Citroën dealers at the time struggled to steer the vast public interest in the right direction, however. And as Citroën did not have access to a sufficiently powerful engine of its own, in 1963 the company reached out to Maserati in Modena, Italy, where eventually the project started following the Italian style of bookkeeping, which ultimately required a French infusion. Maserati was incorporated in 1968, with the aim being to use the V6 engine in the premier SM. Although never officially confirmed, the SM likely stands for ‘Sport Maserati’. That naming slightly missed the mark, however, as both the BMW 3.0CS and Jaguar E-type were faster, owing to SM’s 'limited' engine power and relatively heavy weight. Nevertheless, the car was tremendously well-received, owing to its design and Citroën’s traditional mechanical characteristics, such as the hydro-pneumatic suspension, the speed-sensitive DIRAVI assisted steering system with automatic recoil, the high degree of directional stability, and the characteristically rotating headlights. The SM also claimed its share of world-famous admirers, including Leonid Brezhnev, Jay Leno, Johan Cruyff, Idi Amin and Burt Reynolds. All were big fans, just like you will be. For those seeking a top model in original condition, this is the car for you. Wonderfully original, only repainted for cosmetic reasons, and in the original color Brun Scarabé Métallisé. Experts modified the susceptible points; hence, the cylinder heads were replaced, as were the distribution chains, with tensioners added for an improved and more advanced distribution. The entire suspension system was revised and partially renewed. The clutch is also new. The accompanying pictures clearly show that all gasoline-air and oil hoses were renewed. In short, mechanically, this is also a very special SM.
As standard the SM came equipped with power windows, air conditioning, radio, electric antenna, adjustable steering wheel, and more.
The body is tight, flawless and rust-free. The body was never welded and the undercarriage remains original and rust-free. Beautifully repainted five years ago, top quality paintwork, in the original color: Brun Scarabé Métallisé. The stainless steel elements are pristine and unworn, while the bumper’s only minor flaw is a virtually unnoticeable parking scratch. The doors shut nice and tight on the body, with perfect lines all around. All windows are flawless, as are the headlights, which rotate as they should. Non-smoker.
This SM’s interior deserves special praise. The color, originality and quality are exceptional. Extremely fine, also in combination with car’s brown-metallic exterior. The entire interior is original, and the 77,000 km on the odometer is the original mileage. Beautiful and flawless dashboard. All dials, directionals and the steering wheel are flawless, with all working perfectly. The carpeting is original, without slits. The door panels are extremely fine and retains the original fabric. An exceptionally beautiful, stylish interior.
Neat and clearly highly maintained engine compartment that is home to the original Maserati V6 engine, of which many components have been renewed. One rarely comes across SM technology in such excellent condition. The trunk retains the original upholstery, in mint condition. Full-sized spare tire. Nothing dirty or worn out. The 15-inch steel rims with original hubcaps are equipped with the proper Michelin tires for an SM and have plenty of tread.
This SM was sold new in 1974 to a now elderly resident of Ravenna, Italy. At the time the car was already deemed an icon, hence was rarely parked on the street, which helps prevent models from rusting. This SM was not only sold new in Italy but also remained there until recently, and this, combined with always being garaged, guarantees that she is rust-free. The third owner – who was also well aware of an SM’s mechanical weak spots, carried out comprehensive overhauls of the mechanics in 2015. The previously mentioned technological improvements were commissioned then, as the invoices show. The owner unfortunately was forced to sell the car owing to recent personal financial problems. Owing to the technical improvement and servicing, the car drives great. How an SM drives is a sign of the good mechanics, and this is ultimately what the SM was made for: fine driving!
