Mid 1980s the American Saab importer came up with the idea of selling a convertible version of the already successfully landed 900, especially in the sunny states of the US a convertible 900 would be considered very attractive. In Sweden this was not particularly a priority. Understandable. And so, it started. 900 hardtops were delivered to Valmet (reputable producer in the industry, that for example built the Boxster for Porsche) located in Finland where they made the cars into convertibles. Evidently equipped with required reinforcement and different doors to hug the large sills. This production process made it very costly to build a 900 convertible. As a result of this and high taxes on vehicles the catalogue price of a 900 convertible in The Netherlands at the time was around fl.100.000, - Almost twice the price of a hardtop 900. At the time that kind of money would also buy you an apartment. The model gained appreciation over the years, and, because there are not a lot of alternatives, is nowadays a looked after car. After all, which convertible offers aside fun also this amount of practical space and safety. Meanwhile they are 25 years old which makes it harder and harder to find a nice and scarcely used exemplar. They have never been worth the amount of money one would have to invest into a proper restoration, which is why I look into nice and well-kept original examples such as this car. This 900 today remains the same 900 that rolled out of the factory in 1990, first paint, original convertible roof, original upholstery and complete with the tonneau covers in the exterior colour. Hard to find in this 'new' condition.
This 900 Classic has been fitted with air-conditioning, four electric powered windows, central locking, anthracite leather seats, an electric powered convertible roof, original Saab Aero alloy wheels, a radio/cd player which is hidden from view by an electric opening cover, and at last electric adjustable mirrors.
This 900 may be titled truly remarkable, as she has never been repainted and the body remains in flawless original condition. There are hardly any signs of usage and even the bumpers are undamaged. All the plastic trim fits snug to the body. There are no stone chips at all to be seen. The electric opening-and closing convertible roof remains the factory-fitted original without any signs of wear or tear. Unique!
The interior of this 900 convertible is worthy of a special mention. Wholly original and undamaged. The seats remain in their original shape and have no signs of getting in and out of the car. The interior totally corresponds to the low mileage of this 900. Also, the slightly raised sills the convertible model has are undamaged, as is the carpeting. This is a true time-warp of a car. The steering wheel was an optional three-spoked type, a different wheel we can fit upon request.
Stunning engine compartment, all is clean and factory stickers remain throughout. No rust in the engine compartment. Evidently well-cared for. The air-conditioning has readily been modified to take R134. The luggage compartment features its original upholstery. Seemingly unused. Here one finds the space saver, toolkit, and jack. The 15-inch wheels are free from any parking damages. Very pretty and wrapped in excellent tires.
After having sold more than 950 Saab 900 convertibles I can assure you they can only scarcely be found in this condition. Additionally, this 900 is red, of all colours, after 30 years a car with red paint can only look like this when it has been garaged and used very little. Duly noted. It concerns the so-called full-pressure turbo specification which predominately produces less engine-noise on the motorway than the low-pressure-turbo on behalf of more power and a different gearing. More power also means less revolutions of the engine. This extremely nice, original and truly well-driving 900 Classic Convertible will be delivered with a new MOT, a service and a warranty. Extras are the tonneau covers for when the roof is open, and a dashing boot-rack.
